Collier Seminole State Park: Enjoy the Outdoors Surrounded by Royal Palms, History and Mangroves

Collier-Seminole State Park

Collier Seminole State Park

The royal palm is one of those enigmatic, iconic trees of warmer places like California, Florida and the Caribbean. Here in Naples, Florida, you can definitely see prime examples of royal palm trees. One of the best places for this is Collier Seminole State Park. Located off of Tamiami Trail East near Goodland and fifteen minutes west away from Everglades City, Collier Seminole State Park offers various opportunities for the visitor to see great nature.
The park was originally created by Barron Gift Collier, Jr. to help preserve and protect the royal palms that exist here. However, visitors have a chance to see more than just royal palms here. Visitors can also see mangroves, part of the water way within the Western Everglades that leads into the Gulf of Mexico and closer towards Big Cypress National Preserve. Collier Seminole State Park is also a great place for bird watching, to see alligators, baby dolphins and turtles, and also the potential to catch sight of a panther.
Collier Seminole State Park is also home to the Bay City Walking Dredge, which was used to construct the Tamiami Trail during the 1920s. It is the last of these walking dredges still in existence, which you can see on display once you enter into the park. In addition to the Bay City Walking Dredge, visitors can see a monument in dedication to Barron Gift Collier, Jr., who donated this land to the state to create this park, and examples of Seminole chickee huts and homes.
If you and your family are looking for a great location for recreational outdoor activities, Collier Seminole State Park is the place for you! Come here to fish, canoe, kayak, paddle board, picnic, have an outdoor cookout, or camp. Take your dog for a walk, or bring the kids to play in the playground onsite.
You can either do some of these outdoor activities on your own or with a guide. Starting in December, park volunteers and rangers have guided canoe tours through the park. If you are looking to take a guided tour, or rent a kayak during your visit to Collier Seminole State Park, visit the concessionaire called Collier Seminole Nature Tours, associated with Everglades Adventure Tours.
